Starter relay

Hi everyone. I need some help.. I have a 1.2 tce. Does anyone know if it has a starter relay. I'm guessing that, if so, it will be in the under bonnet fuse box to the right of the battery. Also, does anyone know which one is it...can't find any diagrams on this. Or... is it purely the solenoid attached to the starter? Have very intermittent starting problem where I turn the key and nothing happens....no noise. Then I try again and she starts right up. Only happens every now and again, but driving to Spain in a couple of months and don't want it to suddenly fail.
Don't want to have the starter replaced to find it was just a £5 relay!
Any data would be appreciated.

Had exactly the same problem..
Called out the RAC on one occasion, the mechanic said that it was a common fault on Clios of that age, and that he'd also been to three Winds all doing the same and that it was a glitch in the ECU.. disconnecting the battery for 30 seconds resolved the problem on mine.. also a 1.2... and six months on it hasn't happened since.
It's definitely worth a try, and the radio code doesn't need resetting either

Thanks very much. I thought it might be solenoid breaking down. The starter itself works fine. Looks like a usual computer issue..."turn it off and turn it back on again" luckily it is only occasionally and starts easily straight after. Thanks again.

Hi Old Sea Dog. Just wanted to clarify....30 seconds or 30 minutes disconnection of the battery to reset ECU?

That's 30 seconds..reconnect battery and all should be well..ECU is now reset
Note that the radio code will not need to be reset aftef battery disconnected, but do with the windows up, or the windows will drop one centimetre when the doors are closed and the window reset will have to be performed.

Unfortunately not. Did it, but actually got worse...only because it turned out to be the solenoid attached to the starter motor. It definitely deteriorated with the hot weather and I just got the starter renewed today. All fine now (touch wood). Driving to Spain in a couple of months and it's bloody hot there so not taking any chances. Starters do go, so not surprised after 11/12 years.

Oh yes....will do. Last time was 4 years ago in s Toyota MR2 roadster. The Wind has a lot more luggage space!

So. It's still doing it! Anyway....starter is nice and strong! I'll try the reset again. I'm getting to the point of not really being bothered by itt. Just a Renault thing I think.

Hi Old Sea Dog. Yep. I joined the Facebook page yesterday. The concesus is maybe bad battery and,/or alternator. Both check out fine.
Quick question. When I did the battery disconnection, I did it after the no noise, nothing happened but I did start the car straight after and THEN did the disconnect. When you had the RAC round...had it just happened and you hadn't successfully started it so the RAC man got it at the point of failure.
Mine is just every now and again and starts up fine the next time I turn the key.

Yes.. the RAC mechanic saw it at the point where it wouldn't start.. he's actually a neighbour of mine, so saw it in fault mode. He disconnected the battery to reset the ECU.. fault cured and didn't re-occur
